Synopsis
The story takes place in the ruins of an amphitheater on the outskirts of a once-thriving metropolis. A mysterious, orphaned girl named Momo has taken up residence there. Momo possesses a special power: the ability to listen carefully to what others say. People with troubles gather around her, and as they talk, they find their own answers.
But one day, the “Men in Gray” appear in town. They claim to be employees of the “Time Savings Bank” and preach to people that “saving time will make you rich.” People gradually begin to value efficiency, stop playing and talking, and lose their peace of mind.
Momo notices this strange phenomenon and confronts the Men in Gray with the help of Meister Hora, a being who controls time, and Cassiopeia, a turtle who can slightly predict the future. Her journey challenges us to question “what is time?” and “what does it mean to live?”
Impressions
- It makes you think about the essence of time: More than just a children’s novel, the profound theme of “time = life” remains in your mind. It’s a sharp satire of modern society’s pursuit of efficiency and productivity.
- Momo’s “power of listening” is impressive: Even though Momo doesn’t offer any advice, people find healing through conversation. It really reminds me of the importance of the power of attentive listening.
When I suddenly feel like pausing amidst the hustle and bustle of my busy days, I’d like to read this novel and reaffirm the importance of time and the joy of living in the present.
