Synopsis

Charlie Gordon, the protagonist, is a mentally disabled young man with an IQ of 68. Hoping to become “smarter and be like everyone else,” he undergoes an experimental brain surgery. The success story is that of a mouse named Algernon, who had previously undergone a similar surgery and achieved extraordinary intelligence.
After the surgery, Charlie’s intelligence soars, transforming him into a genius with an IQ of 185. He studies at university, understands complex theories, and surpasses those around him in intelligence. However, along the way, he painfully realizes that those he once thought of as “friends” are actually mocking him, he is deeply hurt by past family experiences, and the impact of intelligence on human relationships.
Eventually, something strange happens to Algernon, and Charlie discovers that the effects of the surgery are temporary. He himself begins to feel a decline in his intelligence and is forced to accept that he will return to his original state.
The story unfolds in the form of Charlie’s diary, which serves as a “progress report,” and the writing style changes as his intelligence changes. The final report includes a eulogy for the late Algernon:
“If you have the chance, please bring a bouquet of flowers to Algernon’s grave in the back garden.”

Thoughts

The film beautifully describes how increasing intelligence affects emotions.
I believe all humans have a desire to become smarter and know more.
However, through this work, I realized that knowing more does not necessarily lead to happiness.
Now, the emergence of AI is having a major impact on us.
I believe it’s time to consider many themes, such as human dignity and the ethics and limitations of science.
In any case, I feel that I want to be a kind person and be someone who can make others happy.
