This story depicts “inherited love” rather than blood ties, following the growth of Yuko, a girl raised in a complex family environment, as she receives the kindness of the adults around her as a “baton.” After reading, one’s heart will be warmed by the diversity of family structures and the chain of human kindness.

●Synopsis

Yuko is a girl who grew up being “relayed” between three fathers and two mothers.
Her last name changed many times, and her family environment was incredibly complicated.
However, she says, “It’s troublesome. I’m not unhappy at all,” because she received deep love from each of her parents. Currently, she lives alone with her stepfather, Morimiya.
Life with Morimiya, who is a little eccentric but sincere and kind, is peaceful and warm for Yuko. The story depicts Yuko’s high school life, memories of her past parents, and her journey to building her own family as an adult,
gently answering the question, “What is family?”

●Impressions

  1. A story of family structures connected by “kindness”
Yuko’s parents change many times, but no one hurts her.
Rather, each parent passes on the maximum amount of love they can.
This metaphor of a “baton” is brilliant, leaving a deep warmth after reading.
  2. Morimiya’s presence is overwhelmingly charming
Despite being an elite graduate of the University of Tokyo, he’s somewhat out of touch and clumsy.
But he acts with all his might for Yuko, and I think he’s a beloved figure as an ideal father figure.
  3. The deep love behind Rika’s “free-spiritedness”
At first glance, Rika seems irresponsible, but it becomes clear in the latter half that she was always thinking about “what’s best for Yuko” and acting accordingly.
This structure deeply moves the reader’s heart.
